From Concept to Sideline Icon: Designing Your Chain
A custom hype chain is the centerpiece of your team's celebrations. Getting the design right means balancing visibility, weight, and visual impact.
If you are putting together an order for your program, here is everything you need to know about designing a custom turnover chain that looks professional and lasts through entire seasons of rowdy celebrations.
Step 1: Choosing and Preparing Your Logo
The medallion needs to be legible from across the field and sharp in high-speed sideline photos.
-
Keep silhouettes bold: Intricate pencil-sketch details or tiny paragraphs of text get lost. Clean outlines, mascots, and bold typography pop best.
-
Format matters: Vector formats (
.SVG,.EPS, or.AI) allow clean multi-layer CAD extrusions. If you only have raster files (.PNGor.JPEG), aim for high resolution (300+ DPI) with transparent backgrounds.
Step 2: Layering Color and Depth
Flat, single-plane cutouts look like cheap foam board. Modern 3D printing allows for multi-tier relief:
-
Base Layer: The solid foundation that establishes the outline shape.
-
Mid Layer: The team primary color and secondary accents.
-
Top Layer: Raised lettering, player numbers, and sharp facial features on mascots.
-
Contrast is King: If your team colors are navy and black, separate them with a bright white or metallic gold outline to make sure the mascot cuts through on camera.
Step 3: Sizing the Medallion
-
Youth Leagues (Ages 6–12): 6 to 8 inches wide. Large enough to look oversized and exciting, but light enough not to burden younger athletes.
-
High School, College & Adult Leagues: 8 to 11 inches wide. Maximum visual impact, perfectly proportioned for sideline cameras and post-game ceremonies.
Step 4: Selecting Chain Links and Hardware
A show-stopping medallion needs an equally bold chain. Interlocking 3D-printed links can be color-matched to your school colors or printed in metallic silver and gold tones. Unlike metal hardware store chains, custom printed links provide that chunky, oversized look without bruising a collarbone when an excited teammate throws it around your neck.
