From the Football Sidelines to Every Playing Surface
The "Turnover Chain" phenomenon exploded on the college football sidelines in 2017. But great traditions refuse to stay in one lane.
Coaches and captains across baseball, softball, lacrosse, basketball, and hockey have adapted the concept to celebrate the specific hustle plays that win games in their sports. Here is how programs everywhere are putting their own twist on celebration chains:
1. Baseball & Softball: The Home Run & "Dugout Dawg" Chain
Baseball dugouts have become creative energy hubs.
-
The Big Fly Chain: Slung over the shoulders of anyone who rounds the bases after crushing a dinger.
-
The Quality At-Bat (QAB) Chain: Rewarding situational team baseball—moving runners over, drawing 10-pitch walks, or executing sacrifice bunts.
2. Basketball: The "Lockdown Defender" Chain
In basketball, scoring gets the glory, but stops win close contests. Smart coaches use a custom chain featuring a padlock or shield emblem. It’s awarded during post-game locker room talks to whoever held the opponent’s primary scorer under their average or took the most charges.
3. Volleyball: The "Roof" & Ace Chain
Volleyball is a game of rapid runs and massive shifts in momentum. Handing a giant chain to a middle blocker after a momentum-shifting solo block ("the roof") or to a server who drops back-to-back aces fires up the home crowd.
4. Ice Hockey: The "Grinder" Chain
Hockey has long had the locker-room helmet or wrestling belt tradition. Teams are now upgrading to customized, team-colored hype chains that highlight gritty shot-blocking, forechecking pressure, and physical defense.
5. Track & Field and Cross Country: PR (Personal Record) Chains
Individual sports thrive when teammates support each other. Awarding a custom chain at the finish tent to athletes who break their personal record (PR) makes individual milestones feel like shared team victories.
6. Tournament MVP Weekend Chains
Instead of handing out medals that end up in luggage pockets, weekend travel tournaments use massive custom chains for their All-Tournament selections. It creates an unforgettable photo-op that players proudly show off on social media.
